Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Description
Baptism and Christian division are a fundamental issue in the ecumenical movement and contemporary pastoral practice. The Eastern Orthodox Churches have historically had divergent practices for the reception of converts baptized in other denominations and attitudes to baptisms celebrated outside the Eastern Orthodox Church. This seminar will explore the various historical practices and theological reasonings behind of the Eastern Orthodox Churches in handling non-Orthodox baptisms in the reception of converts and ecumenical dialogue.

Learning outcomes
• Students will know the historical development of different practices in handling non-Orthodox baptisms in Eastern Orthodox and the various theological models used to explain and interpret these practices.
• Students will be able to analyze the current Eastern Orthodox attitudes in relation to non-Orthodox baptisms in relation to historical examples, polemics, and ecumenical dialogue.
• Students will be able to identify and theologically reflect on important themes in relation to Eastern Orthodox attitudes to non-Orthodox baptisms.

Learning activities
Presentations by the teacher, presentations of assigned reading material by students, written summaries, group discussions, and written essays.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The students will be graded both on their active participation in groups discussion at the seminar and on their individual written work.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Minimal requirements
Mandatory participation in the seminars. Students may be absent two times without special cause. Students must achieve a minimum of 50 points to pass.

Grading
1 (sehr gut) -> 100-89 points
2 (gut) -> 88-76 points
3 (befriedigend) -> 75-63 points
4 (genügend) -> 62-50 points
5 (nicht genügend) -> 49-0 points
Written paper is worth 40 points, seminar presentations are worth 40 points, and participation in seminar discussion is worth 20 points.

Maxwell E. Johnson. Rites of Christian Initiation, Rites of Christian Initiation: Their Evolution and Interpretation. 2nd ed. 2007.
The students will be assigned required readings for the seminar in consultation with the teacher.
