Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

TITLE: CINEMA IN DIALOGUE WITH HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES: RELIGION, FILM AND CULTURE

The aim of the course is to introduce interdisciplinary studies in religion, film and culture into the University of Vienna. The course is an introduction into the studies of religion and arts in the global context. Focusing on the question of reality and the ways in which reality is communicated through film language, we will consider the ways in which religion and history are represented through film across different cultural contexts, both local and global. The seminars will host film directors and world-leading international professors in the fields of religion and film, and history and film. Developed and led by Dr. Milja Radovic, the PI on the FWF-funded Project “Reframing Space: Film as History”, the course welcomes all interested and will be beneficial for students of different disciplines. The course is held in the English language.

Learning Outcomes
Students will have achieved the following goals:
• Develop an understanding and solid knowledge of film, film language, forms of aesthetics, and codes and modes of representation in documentary and feature film.
• Develop critically informed knowledge about the history of world cinema, film theory and methodologies.
• Develop knowledge about the interdisciplinary academic corpus of research in religion and film.
• Develop critical thinking and understand diverse methods of analysis and approaches in researching representations of religion and history through film.
• Understand the links between film language and other forms of art, such as iconography.
• Be able to engage in thinking and analysis of cinematic space as a unique space that communicates on-screen and off-screen realities.
• Understand film as cultural arena in which local and global identities and beliefs are represented and contested.

Method
The Seminar will combine lectures with reading and interpreting primary films, archival material, texts, methods, and concepts in the class. Seminars will include film screenings and PowerPoint presentations to enable students to visually follow and assess the material
and topics of research.
