Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course “History of the Roman Catholic Inquisition(s) and Related Institutions” consists in twelve lectures exploring the history of the Roman Catholic Inquisition. After an introductory part on the inquisition during the Middle Ages, the course will focus on the establishment of the Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition and the Congregation of the Index of Forbidden Books in the fifteenth century until the creation of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in the twentieth century.

Adopting perspectives proper of social history and history of State-Church relations, the course outlines the relations of the Inquisition(s) with other ecclesiastical institutions and statal jurisdictions, especially in Catholic countries.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Oral presentation, participation and class interactions, a short essay to deliver after the course.

In the case of suspicion of non-transparent use of AI (e.g. through citation or indication of the type of use), the course instructor has the right to conduct a “grade-relevant discussion.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The course assessment comprises of a written essay (40%), an oral presentation (30%), and participation and class interaction (30%).

Attendance is compulsory. You may be absent without excuse for a maximum of two units.
