E-learning course for undergraduates in English in cooperation with Notre Dame University (Lebanon) and Cairo University (Egypt), coordinated by the Lebanese NGO Adyan (Foundation for interreligious studies and spiritual solidarity). Participating students should represent the religious diversity in the participating countries: 6 students from Austria (Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Orthodox), 8-10 students from Lebanon (Christians and Muslims from different denominations), 2-3 Students from Egypt (Egyptian Coptic Christians and Muslims). The maximum number of all the students from the three countries is 18.Because we have to insure that the group is mixed, inscription for students of the University of Vienna is NOT possible by UNIVIS, but only by personal application. Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The course introduces students to the historical and contemporary role of religious minorities in Austria and Lebanon which serve as examples for European and Middle Eastern societies characterized by religious diversity. The political status and role of Protestant Christians, Jews and Muslims in Austria will be described as well as the political status and the role of Christians, Jews, Bahai in Lebanon and Egypt. It points out that minorities in countries with a Christian majority face similiar problems as minorities in countries with an Islamic majority. The course presents texts promoting distorted images of minorities and explains why religious minorities have had and still have positive impacts on their societies.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
The assessment will be gradual i.e on the assignments of each module (60%), and one major project (40%). A final decision about the assessment will be taken after consultation of all teachers involved in the project and will be presented in the first meeting of the students in Vienna.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
General objectives:1. To foster the cross-cultural (Euro-Arab and interreligious) communication and dialogue capacities of the students regarding cultural and religious issues. 2. To cultivate among students the acceptance of plurality of religion and the acceptance difference. 3. To develop a critical and analytical understanding of the role of minorities in democracies beyond some stereotypes and stigma.Specific objectives:The course aims to familiarize students with the positive role which minorities have played in the development of societies in Austria and Lebanon as examples of Middle Eastern and European societies. They often have been driving forces for the development of societies. Students should also become aware of stereotypes and distortions in the portrayal of minorities in Arab band European societies. Furthermore students should become aware that the participation in society and the visibility of religious minorities in the public space is a problem for European and for Middle Eastern societies.
Prüfungsstoff
The course is a all-online course. On a weekly basis, the students have to read and analyze short texts. The results of the studies have to be posted in form of answers and short essays on the Moodle platform at fixed dates every week. Students get feedback from other students participating in the course and from the teachers.Teachers are Prof. Dr. Ziad Fahed from Notre Dame University (Lebanon), Prof. Dr. Wolfram Reiss from University of Vienna (Austria), Dr. Nayla Tabbara and Dr. Fadi Daou from Adyan, a Lebanese foundation for interreligious studies and spiritual solidarity, which coordinates the course and administers the e-learning platform Moodle.
