030495 PF Practical exercises in EU-Law (2015W)

Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung

The course aims at training students to apply principles of EU law to concrete cases. The course aims at achieving such objective by analyzing selected judgments of the Court of Justice (ECJ) and by discussing hypothetical cases of application of EU law (i.e. mock cases). Selected ECJ judgments in the areas of constitutional principles of EU law, judicial protection of EU rights and EU internal market law will be discussed during the classes. In addition, students will be asked to solve mock cases, in order to show their ability to apply principles of EU law to concrete cases.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students are required to read the selected ECJ judgments and EU legislation uploaded on Moodle before each class. Each class will include a discussion of the selected ECJ judgments, as well as the analysis of a mock case similar to the case assigned in the written exam.

The assessment is based on two written exams, namely an interim and a final written exam. During the written exams, students will be asked to solve a mock case, similar to those ones previously discussed in the class.

Couse grading:
- Interim written exam = 50% of the final mark
- Final written exam = 50% of the final mark

Students who actively participate in the class by summarizing the facts and the content of one of the judgments or solving one of the mock cases assigned for the class will receive a +. Every + will increase the final grade of 0.25 points, up to a maximum of 1 point.

Literatur

Students are required to read the selected ECJ judgments and EU legislation uploaded on Moodle before each class.

The course takes for granted a basic knowledge of the functioning of the EU institutions and decision-making procedures. Students who have not previously attended any class of EU law are encouraged to read the textbook Essential EU Law in Text. This textbook provides in a schematic manner an introduction to EU law.
