Outline: The course gives an overview of the efforts of the United Nations¿ work in crime prevention and its support for national justice institutions. It gives an introduction to international criminal law, an overview of relevant international conventions, and outlines the direct as well as the indirect enforcement system. A major aim is to demonstrate recent advancements in setting international standards and enhanced international cooperation in combating serious crimes. The focus is on the work of the Vienna based United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime. The course gives students the opportunity to present before UN experts and discuss with them current challenges for international justice.

The course counts for the specialization modules: International Relations (Recht der Internationalen Beziehungen); Criminal Justice (Strafjustiz und Kriminalwissenschaften)

Registration: In the first lesson on 20 October.

Please note that the class will only be open to students who have passed their exam in criminal law; knowledge in international law is an asset.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course provides an overview of the efforts of the United Nations¿work in crime prevention and its support for international justice instutions. The focus is on the Vienna based United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime. The course is exclusively taught by UN staff. Participants give presentations in the presence of UN experts and discuss with them current challenges for international justice. The grades are based on regular attendance, oral participation to discussions, and group presentations. Reading material will be provided in the introductory class.
