Together with Stephan KoppányiThe course provides an overview of the efforts of the United Nations' work in crime prevention and criminal justice. It introduces the participants to the basic principles of international criminal law, relevant international conventions and standards and mechanisms facilitating international cooperation in criminal matters. Staff members of international organizations present recent developments in combating serious crimes and their work aiming at further developing international standards in the area. Students have the opportunity to discuss current international justice issues with UN experts.
Grades: attendance is compulsory in all classes; oral participation; group presentations (with power-point slides); written exam.
Reader will be available for making copies.The course counts for the specialization modules (Wahlfachkörbe) International Relations (Recht der Internationalen Beziehungen) and Criminal Justice (Strafjustiz und Kriminalwissenschaften) as well as foreign language proof for Austrian students (Fremdsprachennachweis).Please note that the class will only be open to students who have passed their exam in criminal law (of whatever country; for Austrian students: 'PUE aus Strafrecht'; (bzw. 'PUE II' nach altem Studienplan); 'Anfängerpflichtübung' is not sufficient); knowledge in international law is an asset. Participants are expected to have a command of the English language which allows them to follow lectures, read texts, give presentations and write an exam in English.Dates:
