Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims to equip students with essential knowledge on the law of diplomatic relations. The objective is to give students an impression of the work of legal advisors of foreign ministries and international organizations confronted with issues relating to the establishment, maintenance, and severance of diplomatic relations.

The topics covered will include bilateral diplomacy, multilateral diplomacy (international organizations, international conferences, and EU foreign relations law), consular relations, privileges and immunities, diplomatic protection, and dispute settlement.

The teaching methods will include lectures, interactive activities and workshops, and short student presentations.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The final grade will be determined by an exam (70%) and in-class participation (30%). In-class participation consists of (1) in-class group activities, (2) short presentations, and (3) regular class participation.

Students are expected to do the assigned readings before each class, failure to do so will result in a lower grade for in-class participation.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

There are no prerequisites for this course. Knowledge of public international law would be an asset.

Prüfungsstoff

The final exam will cover the content of the lectures and assigned readings.
