Aims
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the wide-ranging problems and controversies regarding the epistemological status of the theoretical social sciences, frequently called Methodenstreit or debate of methods. The controversies in the 19th and beginning 20th century will be investigated and diligent students will learn to make sense of and evaluate the historical background, as well as the achievements and main criticism of different epistemological and methodological positions defended in the theoretical social sciences at that time. Also, students will learn that methodological debates in economics are frequently triggered by open problems in economic theory and that different authors sought to solve open problems in economic theory by solving methodological and epistemological problems first.

Problems discussed are: different value theories (objectivist; subjectivist) as basis for explaining exchange and relative prices; different methodological positions regarding the structure of satisfactory explanations in the theoretical social sciences (methodological nominalism, methodological essentialism; methodological individualism; derivatives of methodological essentialism (contract theoretical essentialism, methodological psychological essentialism, methodological inductivist essentialism, meaning analysis); different combinations of different value theories and different methodological positions. In that context: rational explanations of human actions (decision logic), situational analysis, interpretation vs. scientific theory, inductive processes and the importance of generalisations, observational basis, objectivity and values, novelty, complexity, inaccurate forecasts, social dynamics, historical laws; problems of induction and demarcation, epistemological and methodological positions in the theoretical social sciences as solutions of the problems of induction and demarcation; critical evaluation of epistemological and methodological positions in the theoretical social sciences.
