Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Course Overview

With the advent of the business enterprises becoming more and more global in the 21st century, effective/successful managers will be those who would exhibit a profound understanding of the nature and dynamics of doing business successfully in the face of ever changing cross-national similarities and/or differences. The primary objective of this course is to familiarize the students with the global context and environment within which human resources are being managed by the MNEs. The course starts with a discussion on the environment of global business and then moves on to the challenges for the IHRM emerging out of the globalization of business. Finally, it is discussed that how the various functions of HRM could be efficiently and effectively performed/managed in a global context.

7. Repatriation and career issues
8. HRM in the host country context

Course Evaluation

The final scores will be calculated as follows;

The Case Study 30%

Prüfungsstoff

The Case Study

Students will work in teams consisting of 3-4 students to conduct a case study. They will be assigned a comprehensive case encompassing the dynamics of global human resource management in a business organization. They will analyze the case and would present their own assessment and solution(s) to the issues discussed in the case while making an appeal to the different theories/phenomena/concepts discussed/debated during the lectures. The deliverable would be a 5-7 pages, 11 Times New Roman font, single-spaced report to be submitted until 31.05.2012 (23:59). The case study is to be submitted at muhammad.zafar.yaqub@univie.ac.at, a copy also to be uploaded on the Moodle.

The teams are expected to make it sure that all team members;

1. Appropriately voice their opinions, thoughts, and concerns;
2. Contribute to the team’s learning and outcome by giving comparable input in terms of time and work quality;
3. Stay committed to the standard of work agreed upon by the group;
4. Do not free-ride over other’s efforts

Final Examination

A comprehensive Final Examination will be conducted on 07.05.2012 at 14:00 which is intended to gauge the level of comprehension of the various concepts of IHRM discussed throughout the semester.
