Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Course Summary. This course is a reaction to students requesting to know more what it is that professors are doing when they are not teaching. The short answer is: they do research. But what is research, how is it similar or different from what students are taught in regular lectures and what type of research is done at the Department of Economics at the University of Vienna? The aim of this course is to answer these questions.
The first week’s lecture tries to answer the first questions: what is research, how is it similar or different from what students are taught in regular lectures? After that every week a different professor from our department presents his or her research. Each presentation should have the character of a research seminar. In the beginning of each session, a clear motivation for the research is given, also explaining the literature to which the research contributes. Students should be active and ask clarifying questions during the presentation, and the last 15 minutes of each lecture is reserved for discussion questions.

Prerequisites: Microeconomics I (Mikroökonomie I) and Game Theory I (Spieltheorie) I).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Over the semester, students have to choose two presentations on which they have to write a review/assessment. Students also have to be active during class, asking questions and engaging in discussions. To write a review, students have to carefully read the article that is presented, provide an overview in their own words, and identify stronger and weaker points in the paper and/or presentation. Students may discuss the content of an article with the faculty member that has presented it.
