Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course is held in a hybrid format. COntent will be provided in the form of videos (screencasts) on Moodle, and synchronous units at the indicated date (depending on the Covid situation presence or virtual) will be used to discuss open questions, and deepen the understanding of the material.

This course gives a broad introduction into theories of organization. It covers both economic and behavioral views of organization. A particular emphasis is placed on the information processing view of information and the interactions between organization structures and the environment. The role of concepts of bounded rationality for the design of organizations, and the role of knowledge and organizational learning are also discussed.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Mid-term exam (25%): two open free-form questions
Term paper (30%)
Final exam (45%): four open free-form questions (closed book)

The form of the final exam depends on whether it can be held in class or online.
In case the final exam can be held in class, it will be a 90 minutes exam of open questions covering the entire course.
If it is held online, it will be separated into two parts:
1) Online quiz (25%) with two open questions covering the parts of the course not covered by the first quiz
2) Take-out assignment (20%): Essay of 3-5 pages on a topic form the entire course, to be completed in 24 hours

Both quizzes and the take-out assignment are open book
All material submitted may be subject to plagiarism check, and individual follow-up questions may be asked to randomly selected students to verify authorship
NOTE (11.05.21): The FINAL EXAM takes place on-site.
To take part you will need to present a negative COVID-19 test result (or equivalency; more information about accepted tests to be found here: https://studieren.univie.ac.at/en/studying-exams/studying-on-site/ )

Students can apply for a deviating digital examination mode in the following cases (§ 13c of the University of Vienna study law;https://satzung.univie.ac.at/en/study-law/ ):
1. members of groups at increased risk in accordance with the COVID-19 groups at increased risk regulation of the Minister of Health;
2. students who work in healthcare and nursing;
3. students who live together with persons according to sub-paras. 1 and 2 or who care for persons according to sub-para. 1;
4. persons who face restrictions on freedom of travel (regionally/nationally) or are self-isolating (quarantine) on the date of the exam/completion of the partial achievement;
5. students with care obligations who cannot participate on site due to schools or kindergartens being closed, etc.

These students immediately notify the examiners/lecturers of the impossibility of taking a certain exam or completing a partial achievement on site, but no later than seven days before the exam date/date of the completion of the partial achievement.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

After attending this course, students should be able to analyze organizational problems from different perspectives. They should have gained a thorough understanding of organization design variables and their interrelationships, and be able to provide recommendations for solving organizational problems based on a solid theoretical foundation.
Regular attendance is required.
