Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is the efficient management of the set of often autonomous parties involved in the design of new products and services, procuring raw materials, transforming them into semi-finished and finished products, and delivery to the end customer. This course is the base module for the Supply Chain Management major and is recommended to be taken prior to other modules of the major. Prior to attending this class on supply chain management, especially if you are not used to applying quantitative solution methods, it is highly recommended to attend the lecture "Management II - Production, Logistics and Supply Chain Management (MA)".

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Update 24.04.:
- Homework assignments now account for 25% of total grade;
- Take-home exam (35% of total grade) on 15.06.2020.
- Case study (in teams of 2): writing a short report (approx. 10 pages), presentation of results in a short online presentation and to the professor, followed by a short oral exam (this part will account for 40% of the overall grade.)
------
A total of 100% can be obtained by:
- homework assignments (20%; students MUST be present in class and prepared to present the exercises in class upon request)
- a written midterm exam (40%; no course material allowed)
- a written final exam (40%; no course material allowed)

At least 50% have to be obtained for a positive grade. The other grades are distributed as follows:
4: 50% to <63%
3: 63% to <75%
2: 75% to <88%
1: 88% to 100%

Cheating during an examination will be sanctioned according to the university's constitution in its current form (i.e., the entire course will not be graded but marked as cheated and counted as one attempt). Signing for another student will be counted as cheating as well (also during homework sessions).

Students who want to take part in an exam are required to bring their student ID. Otherwise, they will be asked to go to the secretary's office to make a copy of the alternative ID (driver's licence, passport, etc.). Non-official IDs (bank cards, Vorteilscards, etc.) will NOT be accepted without any exceptions. This procedure will not extend the duration of the examination.

The students' IDs will be checked only after handing out the examination sheets. Students who are not on the list or don't have a valid identification card will not be allowed to participate in the examination even if they were already handed an examination sheet.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The objective is to get an overview of the basic problems, concepts and technologies of supply chain management. Especially, students will learn about quantitative decision support techniques to make decisions in centralized and decentralized value chains. Especially, the coordination of suppliers and manufacturers with the respective information and incentive alignment problems will be discussed and illustrated by experiments.
A maximum of 2 sessions may be missed.

Prüfungsstoff

The course consists of a sequence of lectures, exercise classes and case studies. Further, the participants will learn how to model and analyse supply chain design and control problems using quantitative methods. The topics cover distribution networks, decision tree analysis, real options, forecasting, inventory management, newsvendor problems, contracts, pooling, and economies of scale. Basic concepts will be illustrated using Excel-sheets (basic knowledge of the Excel Solver is required).
