Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course will provide a general overview of the medal, an object that emerged in the early 15th century in Italy and quickly spread across Europe during the early modern and modern periods. We will explore the richness and diversity of medal production in Europe over five centuries. In addition to examining medals as historical sources, the course will address specific aspects related to this group of objects: for example portraiture, the interplay between art and power, collecting practices, the history of production techniques, and the social history of medallists.
