Bauernaufstände zwischen dem 16. und dem (langen) 19. Jahrhundert

Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung

Peasant Uprisings from Early Modern Times to 1914 have in some cases halted their governement and changed the political system - mostly though in reaction. There has been a long discussion, whether they may be considered "progressive" or not. In the course we shall try to look into as many sources in the original languages, as we can manage, discuss the aims and achievements as well as the habitus and certainly not omit the question, what we might call progressive.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

From the "Great Peasant War" in Germany to the Peasant Uprisings in China, from India to Russia - peasant wars do seem to be constant elements in the numerous and different transitions to modern societies. Not all these wars were lost - from friesland (a State in the Netherlands) to Schwyz there also were successes. What was common, what was different (in the examples chosen by the participants) ?

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Presentation of texts for common reading, analysis of sources, presentations of topics (as, for instance, "The Deccan Riots" ) Hausarbeit (to be presented till the beginning of the following semester).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aims are to contribute to the understanding of the changes in the centuries up to the 1st. World War, especially in "agrarian societies". In methods aims are, to learn reading and understanding texts stemming from quite different religious, economic, and social backgrounds - different from the 21st. century, in which most people live in towns and countrysides have (been) developed to places of recreation or industrial production of agrarian goods, but different also from middle European cultural traditions.

Prüfungsstoff

The course will start with a general introduction by the prof., go on with common reading of theoretical texts and shared analysis of translated sources - to Russian peasant uprsings in the 17th. and 18th. centuries - Stenka Razin and "Emperor Peter III:". The participants are invited to choose topics, on which they want to offer presentations and write Hausarbeiten.
