Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course introduces Masters students to the use of natural scientific evidence in medieval history. The aim is to master the ability to work with interdisciplinary evidence and to think about its application to the historian's craft. We will read scientific articles in palaeogenetics (human, animal, and pathogen), archaeology, climatology, and other fields. You will learn to read scientific articles with facility and comfort, and we will discuss the wider theoretical problems of putting the hard sciences in conversation with history. The focus is on the medieval period (ca. 500-1500 CE), particularly Europe and the Mediterranean, but we will have occasion to examine a wider global Middle Ages.

Attendance with active participation, careful reading of primary sources and secondary sources, course assignments.
