Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

a. LANGUAGE English (discussion also possible in German)b. AIMS The course is designed to comprehend how the struggle for women’s emancipation and gender equality became one of the ideological battlefields of the global Cold War. The readings will review why and how women constituted a special target group within Cold War competition in various political settings and geopolitical locations. The aim of our discussions will be to de-center conventional narratives of the era based on a simple East-West bloc dichotomy and bipolar rivalry.c. CONTENTS The course explores various forms of women’s activism, from grassroots feminist movements in the "First World" to state-socialist programmes of women’s emancipation in the Soviet Bloc. Through bringing post-colonial perspectives into play and foregrounding transnational social activism, the survey will also map global feminist aspirations, trans-continental alliances as well as ideological frictions among women across the world. d. METHODS Lectures, followed by group discussion (depending on class size), based on lecture contents and reading material.
