Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aims: This mandatory course serves the monitoring of the master's thesis writing process in the field of Global History and Global Studies. First and foremost, this is a course to support the writing process of your thesis.
In the end, your thesis like a paper will be judged on its content, organization, and style. Your peers and the lecturer of this course will evaluate the first draft of a part of your thesis. Students should understand that the overall strength of a paper’s “content” (ideas, analysis, or insights) cannot be separated from its execution (organization, mechanics, and style). After all, language is the medium through which scholars must present and arrange their thoughts.

Method: Students are required to write a part of their thesis twice. The first draft is submitted and subjected to constructive criticism on the areas of content, organization, and style. The second draft together with a presentation --if wanted-- shows the kind of improvement that is satisfying to both, the students of the course and the lecturer, and hopefully the adviser too.

Contents: According to this goal, the focus of this seminar lies on how to deal with feedback?
Whether you are submitting an article to a journal or a thesis project, you will likely receive feedback in the form of a reader's or reviewer's comments. In this seminar, we will address what to do with these comments. We will consider some concerns, including how to determine your revision priorities, what to do when you receive conflicting advice from reviewers or your adviser, how to address points of disagreement, and how to engage with feedback seriously while also maintaining your own vision.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This is a seminar-like course. In the first step, thesis projects will be briefly presented, some in class and all on Moodle. The main focus is on students writing their thesis. Additionally, they are encouraged to respond to a draft of another student’s work, preferably overlapping with his/ her own area of interest. This is not about judging but about helpful feedbacking.

Rules: Personally, grading does not influence my engagement in this course, however, I will not accept more than missing a session twice. Except participants engaged in a field trip will be excused for more than two classes, however, most three.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The participants must be in the active phase of research for their master's thesis.
This is more than anything a supportive course for students in process of writing.
Students should be open to peer motivation and support.
Regular attendance in class is mandatory and determines the grade. Unfortunately, the course design will not work for master thesis candidates who are not able to show up on a regular basis. Cf. comments above.

Prüfungsstoff

In the first session on March 7, together we will develop a structure (= table of content) of a paper or master's thesis. Please, bring with you your own materials gathered from previous courses on the organization and form of a paper. We will compare and check them in order to figure out what the essential details of a thesis are and to which extent you can agree on them.
