Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to a critical understanding of several of the main themes of the economic, social, political, cultural and religious history of the British Isles across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Students will be introduced in depth to the key theoretical and methodological debates about selected areas. By the end of the seminar students are expected to apply the tools of critical historical analysis to one specific question of British history of their choice. The term ‘British history’, itself an object of investigation of this seminar, is meant to encompass the histories of England, Scottland, Wales and Ireland, that is the four historic constituent parts of the (British) Isles that today belong to the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

British History as Literary History

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Marking is based on four components, regular attendance and active partipation in the seminar, an oral presentation of not more than twenty minutes, the critical analysis of a selected source and a written paper including an abstract of not more than 25 pages. All participants are obliged to discuss their workload, in particular their written paper, with the lecturer at least once in one of his weekly ‘surgery hours’ or make a separate appointment to that end. The deadline for submission of the written work is 30 September 2011. Earlier submissions are welcome.
Credits (Punkte):

6 ECTS-credits for all Master-Studies in History (MA Geschichte: Vertiefung 2 Späte Neuzeit, MA Globalgeschichte und Global Studies: Pflichtmodul Vertiefung 1: Fragestellungen der Globalgeschichte: Themen der Globalgeschichte, MA Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftliche Europaforschung: Vertiefung 1, MA Zeitgeschichte: Vertiefung 1 + 2) and 10 ECTS-credits for BA-Studies (BA-Modul 2).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The aims to be achieved in this seminar are determined by the ‘Studienplan’.

Prüfungsstoff

The methodological tools are detailed in the ‘Studienplan’. Particular emphasis will be placed on interactive scholarly dialogue. For the seminar to be conducted in an interactive manner the careful preparation of the assignments is essential.
