Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course focuses on various aspects of mosques in the Ottoman Empire (ca. 1299–1922), including their urban layout, architecture, calligraphic and tile decoration, patronage of sultans, palace women, and eunuchs, and olfactory and auditory environments. It studies mosques as structures with certain plan types and architectural features, as spaces with functions beyond communal prayer, and as parts of complexes with religious, educational, commercial, and charitable dependencies. The course aims to equip students with skills to examine different mosque types, structural and decorative elements, stylistic influences, and regional diversity.
