Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course focuses on architecture in the Ottoman lands from the fourteenth to the early twentieth century. It offers a study of monumental and religious space production, as well as civic and military architecture including imperial tents. It follows recent contributions to Ottoman architectural history concerning sensory studies, gender and sexuality, and digital heritage. The course aims to equip students with skills to identify different building types, techniques, and materials and to interpret various stylistic influences, motives of patronage, and regional dynamics from the Balkans to the Arab provinces.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This course requires the active contribution of students, in which they present selected readings, ask critical questions, and lead discussions. It is a course with continuous assessment, which also includes a final research paper.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Regular attendance, critical approach to sources, basic terminological knowledge, and participation in discussions.
