Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The Sasanians were the last of the dynasties since the Ancient Orient which reigned over Iran before the Arab Islamic conquest and in a period that corresponds to Late Antiquity in the Mediterranean. Originating from Southwestern Iran, the Sasanian rule soon included the entire Iranian plateau, and spread to Mesopotamia in the West and Transoxiana in the East.Sasanian art and architecture developed specific forms, elements, and techniques and served a political and religious context of royal representation and Zoroastrian cult traditions. Scholarly knowledge of Sasanian visual and material cultures rests mostly on archaeological evidence and excavations, such as the monuments in the cities of Firuzabad and Bishapur in Southwest Iran and of Ctesiphon in Mesopotamia, the fire temple of Takht-i Sulaiman in West Iran, or rock reliefs depicting scenes of victory and investiture such as at Taq-i Bustan. Sasanian art and architecture continued to be significant in the Early Islamic period when royal traditions were adopted by the Arab ruling elite.This course introduces to Sasanian art and architecture by discussing key examples from different genres with a view to evolution and function. The main goal is to acquire an understanding of main motifs and formal characteristics and of the context of artworks within Sasanian political history and religion. Genres to be considered include palace and temple architecture, the imagery of royal rock reliefs, metalwork and coins. Some attention will also be paid to the reception of Sasanian art in the Early Islamic period, hence on the process of change and continuity from Sasanian Late Antiquity to the Early Islamic period.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students discuss one building or group of artefacts after researching and critically reading relevant secondary literature. They describe characteristics and functions of the work and discuss it in the light of significant hypotheses from their reading.
