Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This lecture course provides a selective introduction to important themes in the religious, social, and cultural history of Late Antiquity. After an introduction to the concept of the “Spätantike,” we will move backwards to study topics such as medical and judicial inscriptions from Epidaurus and Asia Minor, the NT Book of Acts, Apuleius, Martyrdom and Persecution, the 3rd C., Constantine, the Altar of Victory crisis, and the Sack of Rome. Men’s relationship to the gods and the nature of the pax deorum will be central themes, likewise the transition from paganism to Christianity.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Grades will be determined by performance on a tripartite exam, involving “rich” identifications, translation(s), and an essay. There will be some choice. For students wishing to take the course for EC, a “gobbet” (“close reading” of a passage in translation) will be substituted for the translation. The language of instruction will be German, but Erasmus students or visitors are free to write their exams in English, French, or Italian, should they wish to.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students must be able to handle the Latin texts assigned din the original, unless they are enrolled as EC-Students

Prüfungsstoff

All the content of the lectures plus all the readings. Students will do best who attend the lectures and read the required texts attentively in advance. The teacher enjoys a pro-active audience, so students are encouraged to ask questions. Careful philological preparation of the readings as well as critical thinking about general issues will be required to do well on the exam

Literatur

A wide range of short primary texts all available on Moodle. Most primary readings will be in Latin, but occasionally there may be Greek (or Latin) materials to be read in English or German translation.
