Although classical archaeology often focuses on urban centres, most of the ancient Greek world was rural. People lived in farmsteads and villages, worked on the land, and moved through the landscape constantly on journeys at all scales. Investigating the rural world, however, relies on particular methodologies. This course aims to introduce you, not only to the archaeology of the rural Greek world, but also to each of these methodologies.Content:
We will consider the archaeology of the rural Greek world from the Late Bronze Age through to the Hellenistic period, using case studies in order to introduce methodologies in archaeological survey, mapping, phenomenology, and different types of environmental archaeology. Methods:
Classes will comprise a lecture section to introduce the topic and methodology, followed by a practical exercise working with data from the rural Greek world.
