Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course deals with the relationship of religion and politics in Modern Greek history and culture. At first, we will examine the role of religion in the emergence of Modern Greek identity, the role of the church in the Ottoman empire, the articulations and conflicts between the representatives of the Enlightenment and the church hierarchy. The modern Greek state was based on the principles of secularism and religious freedom; after 1833, the Greek church was declared to be autocephalous. Inextricably connected with internal and international politics during the last century of the Ottoman empire, religion was at the heart of the irredentist project of the Megali Idea and had a key role in the integration of different ethnic groups into the Greek state. Exploring the connections between popular religious culture and officially instituted religion in the twentieth century, we will focus mainly on the involvement of religion in mass politics, reviewing the different positions and attitudes of the Greek church and the state towards religious minorities (Jews, Catholics et. al.), as well as some of the most controversial moments of politicization of the church and the political activity of missionary movements and associations.
