Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This is a national and international, doctoral and post-doctoral group that meets weekly on Zoom to discuss research problems in the fields of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Participants take turns sharing a text, or problem, or draft with the group. The group is multi-national and multi-lingual, but the instruction is primarily in English and German. The class is primarily intended for doctoral students and post-doctoral students in Late Antique and Medieval Studies. It will be held online, since the participants live in different countries and indeed hemispheres. External faculty have been known to join the group. We engage in shared activities such as criticizing drafts, practicing oral presentations, reading, translating, and interpreting interesting texts together, and simply talking about research problems. It is more of a forum or a clinic than a top-down class. It is held in English, but also uses German and Italian as needed.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Only some participants take the course "for a grade." Those taking the course for credit are expected to attend regularly, present their own research (= being “active”) several (= 2 to 3) times, and discuss the research of others. Doctorands will need to submit a substantive new chunk of work by the end of the grading period to show progress on their dissertations.
