Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course deals with the language produced by learners of English. We will consider different types of learner language and also how different language learning theories see the status of learner language. The main focus of the course will be on gaining insights and hands-on experience with different research methods and how they can answer questions about learners’ productions. Some general issues of conducting research within an educational framework will be addressed, including research ethics, researcher bias, research politics.
Aims:
Students will get to know a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to the language produced by learners of English and will be able to apply them to student texts. Students will be aware of the interdependence of research questions and methods. Students will be familiar with the basic steps in designing a research project of their own. Students will get to know the most important research journals for language teachers.

(Note that this is course is the ‘general’ seminar in the MEd and NOT about providing specific support for your MEd theses. This is addressed in the MA thesis seminar)

Methods: mini-lectures, presentations, readings, interactive discussion, group work, assignments, group research project

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

In order to successfully complete the course, students have to do all of the following:
A. Participate actively in class, i.e. timely completion of online tasks and two short methods assignment tasks during the course (40 points in total)
B. Group project and presentation (60 points in total)

Both parts (A+B) have to reach at least 50% of max points (A=20, B=30) for a pass grade.
