Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This is an introduction into modern English syntax, topicalizing in some formal ways sentence structures as well as other constituents (DP, AP, adverbials) on the basis of the introduction by van Gelderen. In extension to this, T(ense)-A(spect)-M(ood) will be discussed preferably in comparison to languages other than English: What are the English components of TAM as compared to other languages?

Organisation:
10 sessions each two hours (sine tempore) beginning October 8, every day until October 19; then a moratorium will follow until the end of November/beginning December to allow for three more classes for the obligatory oral presentations. Exact session times to be determined in the first class on Monday, October 8, but please watch out also for the exact timing of the October sessions when you register for the course at the beginning of term!

Requirements: Each student admitted will have to prepare a particular topic (chosen together with the docent) and present that at the end of the course period. Length of presentation: some 20 minutes, preferably comparing English with some other language(s). (+handout and/or power point).

Two books will be needed to accompany the semester plan: E.v. Gelderen "English syntax" 2003 (Amsterdam: Benjamins) and W. Abraham & Th. Janssen (eds.) 1989. "Tempus - Aspekt - Mood and Modality". Die lexikalischen und grammatischen Formen in den germanischen Sprachen." Tübingen: Niemeyer. Classes will have to be prepared for each session: We shall practice syntactic constituency (on the basis of van Gelderen). The TAM-book provides numerous detailed illustrations, and it will serve the purpose of preparing specific seminar talks.
