Concepts of "folk-culture"
Storey's definitions of Popular Culture
Development of "popular culture"/mass-culture in Modernism & Postmodernism
Postmodern capitalist consumer-culture (perspectives: Marxism, Frankfurt-School, pop-art)

Concepts of Subculture & Counter-culture: Historical development, theoretical approaches; example: PUNK, The Beats (1950s) / Ginsberg "Howl"
- Gendered, Sexed, and Racialized Cultural Concepts of "the Other"
We will especially look at meaning making in the production and consumption of cultural artifacts, investigate the dynamics of representation, power and knowledge, and relate these issues to questions of constructions of "race"(vs ethnicity), gender and class. Theoretical models and perspectives will be constantly grounded in practical examples, focused on but not limited to visual cultural material.
