Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will explore the notion of Intercultural Competence from a linguistic point of view by engaging participants in activities which focus on how the values and beliefs of different cultures find expression within the languages themselves and in the way they are used pragmatically in communication.
Phase one will engage students in a process of cultural reflection and awareness raising using field research, word association and dialogue completion exercises, case studies and critical incident analysis. Phase two builds on this enhanced awareness and involves students in task-based language learning on-line, requiring them to draw on the knowledge of their mother tongue and the foreign language to solve problems, negotiate meaning and make culturally and linguistically appropriate decisions to achieve particular communicative objectives.

Students will work in teams, both Austrian and Irish/Austrian, and individually on a range of activities, culminating in the preparation and participation in a negotiation exercise, which will take place via video-conferencing. Throughout the term students will be required to report on their findings and observations on-line and in class.
Assessment will be based on class participation, written assignments and short oral presentations.
