Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Literature has always been peopled with depraved characters of all varieties. More often than not, these evil figures are more interesting than their upright and moral counterparts. In this introductory seminar we will analyse two contemporary texts featuring deviant characters: The Collector (1963) by English novelist John Fowles and This Is How It Goes (2005) by American film director, screenwriter and playwright Neil LaBute. Fowles's novel is a psychological thriller, the story of the abduction and imprisonment of Miranda Grey by Frederick Clegg, told first from the point of view of the mentally disturbed kidnapper, and then from that of the victim by means of a diary she has kept. This Is How It Goes, the story of an interracial love triangle set in a small town in America, is a play about manipulation, exploitation, race and infidelity. An American critic even claims that "This Is How It Goes is really about what almost all of Mr. LaBute's work is about: the theory that all men (he means men, not men and women) are animals, except that most animals are probably nicer."

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

This class deepens and extends the subject matter of the introductory course 301. It is intended to help students develop a well founded yet independent critical approach to literary texts. Participants are given a thorough grounding in various skills and techniques required for the writing of academic papers: the use of works of reference; the use and evaluation of secondary literature; more about the theory and practice of critical analysis; the correct use of literary terminology. A selection of literary texts forms the basis for this work. On completing the class, students should be in a position to take an active part in the literary seminar.
