Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Content: Increasingly, students with many different first languages participate in seminar-type courses, and we need English as a lingua franca (ELF) to be able to communicate. In this seminar, we shall thus explore how we, like large numbers of other people in the world, use English as a lingua franca. We shall consider ELF, a hitherto unprecedented global phenomenon of language spread, and then go on to investigate the variability of ELF. By homing in on specific linguistic forms, we shall examine how these function effectively in the negotiation of meaning in interaction.

Assessment: Participants will be assessed on the basis of oral presentations, active participation in discussions, and written research papers. All presentations will take place during the seminar conference.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The objective of this course is for participants to be made aware of the sociolinguistic reality of, and the theoretical background to, the study of English as it has developed as a global lingua franca. In particular, students will learn to analyze the forms that ELF takes when used for various purposes in intercultural communication, and to appreciate the functional motivation of these forms.
Prüfungsstoff
Methods: In an introductory phase, the agenda of the seminar will be presented, selected readings discussed, and participants will gradually develop their research questions. Participants will be offered an introduction to VOICE Online, the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (http://www.univie.ac.at/voice/), and will be given guidance in choosing and analysing interesting features of the use of spoken ELF. Students will then be able to conduct their own searches and investigations, and will discuss their ideas and findings both during the weekly sessions as well as at the seminar conference. This seminar conference will be held on Friday, June 11th afternoon, and all day Saturday June 12th, concurrently with Prof. Ritt's seminar.
Literatur
Reading: Some introductory reading will be made available to registered participants to help preparation for the first session, and a short list of relevant titles will be distributed in the early part of the course.NB Full participation in the seminar conference in June is mandatory and an integral part of the course, so please bear this in mind when registering for the seminar!
