Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The introductory survey course on American Literature and Culture from the Early 17th to the Late 19th Centuries will provide opportunities to discuss important public and literary documents produced in North America in the colonial and early federal periods as well as in the 19th century until the closing of the frontier. In addition to selections from texts which have become classics (Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography, Crèvecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer) and early poems (for instance, by Anne Bradstreet and Philip Freneau) the course will consider a tale by Edgar Allan Poe (whose birth 200 years ago was commemorated in 2009).
A Reader containing excerpts from documents mirroring the colonial experience, and the gradual development of a distinct collective identity will be available. It will incorporate tales by Washington Irving and E. A. Poe, and segments from Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as well as excerpts from life writings by such figures as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs.
