Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The aim of this course is to identify the most important concerns and concepts of postcolonial theory. It studies critical responses to the attitudes and mentalities that enabled colonial endeavours (explaining why there is such a thing as a postcolonial Shakespeare) and it will take us to recent debates concerning the representation of postcolonial topics.

We will apply some of the key concepts of postcolonial theory to the practical analysis of literary and non fictional material by Chinua Achebe, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Salman Rushdie, V. S. Naipaul and others.

Assessment: students will give an oral presentation and submit an essay by the end of the semester.
