Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The aim of this course is to identify the most important concerns and concepts of postcolonial theory. It studies critical responses to the attitudes and mentalities that enabled colonial endeavours (explaining why there is such a thing as a postcolonial Shakespeare) and it will take us to recent debates concerning the representation of postcolonial topics.We will apply some of the key concepts of postcolonial theory to the practical analysis of literary and non fictional material by Chinua Achebe, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Salman Rushdie, V. S. Naipaul and others.Assessment: students will give an oral presentation and submit an essay by the end of the semester.

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the critical concepts of postcolonial theory and teach them to apply them in their own interpretations of literature and culture.
Prüfungsstoff
Short lectures to introduce and explain the most important critical concepts of postcolonial theory will be complemented by student presentations and discussion.
Literatur
Short stories, poems, extracts from longer works and critical articles will be available on the Electronic Learning platform and in a Reader.
