Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This lecture series will evolve around the key determinants of identity, difference, diversity and change in historical and contemporary dimensions. The discussion during the term will be informed by cultural studies methodologies and include but not be confined to the following thematical clusters: Canadian identity, myths, symbols and 'landscapes'; the genesis of Canadian nation formation and the historical development of bi/multi/transculturalism in Canada; Native cultural diversity before Colonialisation (pre-1600 culture and life of First Nations and Inuit); geographical and ideological regions in Canada; early formations of (post-) colonial national identities; the challenges of multiculturalism; Canadian Literary Landscapes (as world literature); Canada's Franco-Canadian and Quebecoise realities and experience and La Révolution tranquille - social, economic, cultural change in Quebec in the 60s; (Anti-) Americanism in Canada and Canadian national identity in opposition to a US-American model; Mondo Canuck - Canadian Pop Culture.

Requirements: Final written exam.
