Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In this seminar we shall deal with the representation of regional and social accents of English in contemporary movies. We shall collect data by transcribing selected spoken passages from current DVD editions. In our analyses we shall try to identify the accents represented in the movies as well as the processes behind variation in the pronunciation of individual characters. We shall attempt to account for our findings in terms of Natural Phonology and try to find out how realistic accent representations in contemporary movies really are.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Participants will be assessed on the basis of oral presentations and written research papers. All presentations will take place during a seminar conference at the end of November (Nov 27th, afternoon, and Nov 28th, all day). Full participation in the conference is mandatory, so please bear this in mind when registering for the course.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The seminar intends to improve our ability to deal with non-standard accents of contemporary English, to make us aware of the regularities behind socially, regionally, stylistically, or situationally conditioned variation in pronunciation, and to make us realise that phonology is a dynamic multi-level system rather than the mere representation of speech in terms of chains of phonemes.
Prüfungsstoff
In an introductory phase, the agenda of the seminar will be presented and discussed, and participants will choose their topics. In the following workshop sessions we shall learn about and practice our skills in the transcription and analysis of non-standard accents of English. Also we shall familiarise ourselves with the basic tenets of Natural Phonology and with the way it treats phonological variation. During a seminar conference on the 27th and 28th of November participants will report on the progress of their projects and attempt to make their findings relevant to one another. The final part of the seminar will be dedicated to the production of written research papers, which will be due in the first week of February.
