Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar will analyse two of the most famous Victorian novelists in the context of their time. The idea is to give a comprehensive introduction into their work by concentrating on characteristic themes, narrative conventions and formal peculiarities.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Class participation, oral presentation, essay (22-25 pages), and final written test.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students become acquainted with fictional autobiography, the picaresque novel and the historical novel after Walter Scott.

Prüfungsstoff

Oral presentations of selected topics, with subsequent discussion in class. A list of four early topics will be available from 1 July onward. Students volunteering for these early topics will be accepted automatically for this seminar.

The following texts should be bought: Charles Dickens: David Copperfield, Great Expectations, and A Tale of Two Cities; William M. Thackeray: Vanity Fair, Henry Esmond (all available in Pb.)
