Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Aims: Students know fundamental concepts and strategies of academic work, with special focus on literature and information research. They are familiar with the many information resources relating to English and American Studies and are able to make informed choices which to use when addressing academic problems. They know about the requirements of academic best practice. They are able to understand the relevance of information literacy for their future professional practices.Contents: Concepts and strategies of academic work, with special focus on literature and information research; information sources for English and American Studies; academic best practice; information literacy in academic and school environmentsMethods: Blended learning: activating lecture, teacher input, some inverted lecture sessions, individual and group online activities in Moodle and the social media.Students are expected to keep a learning diary, which will not be assessed but help with the final reflective essay.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Attendance, class and online participation, regular assignments, written mid-term exam (Multiple Choice, June 6, 2016), final reflective essay on IRL learning experience, material covered and class and online activities.Students are expected to keep a learning diary, which will not be assessed but help with the final reflective essay.This is a class with mandatory attendance.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students need to achieve a minimum of 60% to pass this class.Positive grades:
- 1: 90-100%
- 2: 80-89.9%
- 3: 70-79.9%
- 4: 60-69.9%The following components count towards the final grade:
- Attendance, class and online participation: 15%
- 3 graded assignments: 15% (5% each)
- Written exam (Multiple Choice): 35%
- Bonus points for extra work may be awarded
- Final reflective essay on IRL learning experience, material covered and class and online activities as well as on parts of the learning diary: 35%
- Bonus points for extra work may be awardedThe general rule of mandatory attendance is: Since the face-to-face sessions are blocked (fewer 90-minute sessions per month instead of one 45-minute session per week), students can only miss one session per semster.Non-attendance of the first session without an important reason leads to deregistration.
