HYBRID with streaming (Collaborate)
The lecture hall will be open for a limited number of people (52) while the rest can watch the stream during or after the lecture.
* Use the "choice" tool in moodle to reserve a place from week to week.

Whether you are in the lecture hall or online (during the actual lecture), there will be small-group discussions in most sessions using breakout rooms in Collaborate via Moodle. Whether in the lecture hall or online, you will need a headset/headphones and a mic (but no camera) to participate in these discussions. Technical details will be available in Moodle.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Content
This lecture provides an overview of concepts and terminology used in grammatical analysis and demonstrates how these are applied in the analysis of syntactic structures and texts. In this way, this course provides an important foundation for both language classes and linguistics courses.
Aims
- to identify and name the individual parts of syntactic structures (using standard terminology)
- to talk informedly about key grammatical categories and explain their use in a given context
- to recognise and rectify common errors
- to make independent and judicious use of reference books
Methods
The lecture course consists of lectures and an accompanying moodle course.

Please note that the following classes accompany the lecture course:
* Tutorials (2 parallel groups) – times and venues to be announced on Moodle and in the separate descriptions of the tutorials in u:find.
* Study groups – time and venue to be announced on Moodle
These courses are an additional offer to help you pass the exam; attendance is not mandatory.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Written examination (two dates per semester, on site: normally mid-December and end of January), multiple option (90 minute "Modulprüfung" in conjunction with ISL1)
No materials permitted in the exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Minimum pass level: Both parts of the Modulprüfung in combination must reach 60% while one part may not be any lower than 55% (with the other part making up the missing percentages to reach the 60% overall). There are two exceptions to this.
* If you get a 1 (Sehr gut) in one exam, you only need 52% in the other exam to pass the Modulprüfung.
* If you get a 2 (Gut) in one exam, you only need 54% in the other exam to pass the Modulprüfung.

Grading scale: 1 (sehr gut) 100-85%; 2 (gut) 84-77%; 3 (befriedigend), 76-69%; 4 (genügend) 68-60%; 5 (nicht genügend) 59-0%.

The topics covered in the 12 units of the lecture (About grammar: basic concepts; Constituents & word categories 1-2; Phrases 1-3; Syntactic functions; Clauses 1-2; Beyond the clause 1-2; Grammar and text)

Literatur

There is a Language Analysis handout, which students are requested to buy from CopyStudio (Schwarzspanierstraße 10, 1090 Wien; cash only).
If you do not live in Vienna, please organize somebody to buy one for you and send it to you by post. You need a copy, ideally BEFORE the first lecture.
