Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This lecture course forms the first part of a one-year introductory program that aims at providing first-year students of English with an overview of the major areas of linguistic knowledge. In the first semester, we study ways of describing and transcribing the sounds and sound system of English (phonetics/phonology). We then consider how language varies in relation to different social and geographical factors and how this variation may be described (sociolinguistics). We examine how language functions in communication and how humans use language to create meaning in interaction (pragmatics, discourse analysis). Finally, we analyze the ways in which children learn their first language (first language acquisition) and in which people learn further languages at a later stage (second language acquisition).

This means that the course familiarizes students with the basic principles of phonetics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, first and second language acquisition. Students will also be able to apply their knowledge to English texts and to read English in phonemic transcription.

Please note that the following classes accompany the lecture course:

Tutorium
Mon, 6-8 p.m., Unterrichtsraum, Irene Böhm (starting March 11)

Study Groups
time and venue will be announced

AR Phonetic Transciption (2 parallel groups):
1. Mon, 12-1 p.m. Unterrichtsraum, Klaus Hofmann (starting March 11)
2. Wed, 1-2 p.m. Unterrichtsraum, Thomas Martinek (starting March 13)

These courses are an additional offer to help you pass the exam, attendance is not mandatory.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Written examination (two dates per semester), multiple option (90 minute "Modulprüfung" in conjunction with Language Analysis).
No materials permitted in the exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Minimum requirement for a pass: Both parts in combination must reach
60% while one part may not be any lower than 55% (with the other part
making up the missing percentages to reach the 60% overall). There are
two exceptions to this. If you get a 1 (Sehr gut) in one exam, you
only need 52% in the other exam to pass the Modulprüfung. If you get
a 2 (Gut) in one exam, you only need 54% in the other exam to pass the
Modulprüfung.

Average score (both parts)  - Grade
100%  -  85%         -->      1
84%   -   77%         -->      2
76%   -   69%         -->      3
68%   -   60%         -->      4
59%   -   00%         -->      5
The average score on both parts (ISL1 and LA) is rounded up/down to
the nearest whole number (integer) to work out the final grade.

Prüfungsstoff

All the topics covered in the lectures and in the required readings; a list of chapters from the two prescribed books will be provided on Moodle.
