Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course, we will explore concepts and areas in the study of pragmatics such as reference and deixis, the Cooperative Principle, Speech Act Theory, politeness as well as principles of spoken interaction and conversation analysis. This will be done with a special emphasis on how people use language in all kinds of professional contexts, such as company websites, corporate social media channels, business meetings and other institutional settings.
In class, different areas of pragmatics and professional communication will be discussed on the basis of required readings and examples of naturally-occurring language use. For term papers, students will carry out individual research projects in which they analyze a particular topic in pragmatics in a data set from one of the professional contexts specified at the beginning of term.

AIMS:
After this course, you should have a good overview of central concepts in the study of pragmatics. You should be able to identify these concepts in samples of language from a range of (professional) contexts, and you should be able to discuss how interpretations are derived on the basis of general pragmatic principles. You should be able to investigate a topic of pragmatics in more detail independently by analyzing it in a particular professional context of language use.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students are assessed on the basis of participation, assignments, presentation and a written term paper. At the beginning of term, students will form pairs to choose and prepare data sets from different professional contexts. Based on these data sets, each student will work independently on an individual topic for presentation and written paper.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Course evaluation is based on:
• attendance, reading assignments, homework & active in-class participation (10 %)
• data assignment (in pairs) (10 %)
• paper proposal with research log (15 %)
• student presentation (~10 mins) (15 %)
• term paper with research log (50 %)

The minimum requirements for passing the course are:
(a) regular class attendance (max. 2 absences!) and attendance of mini-conference
(b) handing in data assignment (on set date)
(c) handing in paper proposal with research log (on set date)
(d) giving the oral presentation (on set date)
(e) handing in the term paper with research log (on set date)
(f) attaining 60 of the maximum of 100 points in total
(g) refraining from plagiarism in all tasks.

Final grades & points achieved:
Sehr gut: 90-100; Gut: 80-89; Befriedigend: 70-79; Genügend: 60-69; Nicht Genügend: 0-59
