Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Between lexicology and lexicography, there is a circular, symbiotic, chicken-and-egg relationship. Lexicology depends on the groundwork for each word provided by lexicography; at the same time, lexicography depends on the categories and classifications of lexicology. Cutting across those areas of description lies lexical semantics, or the study of meaning relationships which words can have.
This seminar will introduce students to the main concepts and their analysis in all three areas. Theory and practice, description and analysis will go hand-in-hand: it will be a very practical seminar, with weekly assignments.

Further reading will be prescribed topic by topic. Extensive use will be made of dictionaries both hard copies [in the Handapparat in the Fachbereich Bibliothek] and online.
