Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

'Standard English' is a central notion of language description and language teaching, and standardization involves the institutional recognition of one codified variety of a language thereby giving it a privileged status. But what exactly does 'standard' mean, and how does Standard English come about? In this seminar we shall work towards an understanding of the process of standardization, in particular how standards are always contextually relative, i.e. established in a particular set of circumstances and at a particular time, and only apparently stable.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students will be assessed on the basis of participation in discussions throughout the course, a short project outline, the oral presentation of their research project, and a written seminar paper.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The main objectives of this course are to foster awareness of the process of standardization and to raise critical questions about the nature of Standard English. We shall also ask how ideas about standardization may be affected in particular in the case of English, given that the language has been appropriated as a lingua franca on a global scale and its resources are often used in international settings without deference to the authority of Standard English.

Prüfungsstoff

In the first phase of the course, we shall engage in a shared reading and discussion of several papers or book chapters as well as some practical work with language data, in particular corpora. Our discussions will be designed to help participants develop their research questions and plan their own projects. The second phase of the seminar will be dedicated to individual project work. In the final phase participants will present their projects and findings in oral presentations and written research papers.

Literatur

References for readings and some electronic resources will be made available and discussed in the first phase of the seminar.
