Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The focus of this course is the empirical exploration of the status and role of the English language in Viennese public space, i.e., in what can be called the 'linguistic landscape' (LL) of Vienna. Empirical methods will be applied in hands-on field investigations of the object of study.
Students will complete group field work projects that establish and describe forms of the presence of English in the Viennese LL. For data collection, students will take photographs of LL signs in designated survey areas in Vienna. Data collection and analysis are guided by the research methodology, designs, and rationale of the ongoing FWF-project 'English in the Linguistic Landscape of Vienna, Austria (ELLViA)' – see http://homepage.univie.ac.at/barbara.soukup/ellvia.html

The goals of this course are
i) to further develop the research and analytical skills necessary for the study of linguistics, with a particular focus on conducting sociolinguistic field work;
ii) to develop course participants' knowledge and insight in the topic area of linguistic landscapes and language use in the public space.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students carry out fieldwork projects that are to be the basis for their final seminar/BA papers.
Field work is to be carried out in small groups. However, the final seminar/BA paper is to be written individually, on the basis of the collectively compiled data.
Further tasks include: project proposal and outline, oral project presentation, class participation, assignments.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The following constitute mandatory requirements for this course:
- Individual seminar/BA paper (70pts) – to be submitted by the indicated deadline
- Project fieldwork and oral presentation (20pts)
- Assignments (including proposal and literature search) and class participation (10pts).

Sehr gut: 100-91pts, Gut: 90-81pts, Befriedigend: 80-71pts, Genügend: 70-61pts, Nicht genügend: 60-0pts.

To pass this course, you must receive a passing point score (=more than 50% of points) on at least 2 out of the 3 above-listed; and you must reach at least 61pts overall.

Further minimum requirement for passing:
Class attendance (max. 2 absences)
