Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In this course we will investigate our own accents of English. We will record one another, transcribe and analyse one another's speech phonetically and phonologically. Thereby, we will learn how to investigate and describe the phonetic properties of speech systematically. We will also try to explain the sounds and sound patterns that we discover in phonological terms, that is to say we shall not only describe how we pronounce our various Englishes, but also try to understand the patterns that we discover. The first part of the course will offer an introduction to narrow phonetic transcription, to systematic methods of phonetic data collection, and to the basics of Natural Phonology. Then students will do their own empirical and analytical work, and will report on their work in progress during a mini conference to be held on Friday 3rd, and Saturday 4th of June (attendance is mandatory). At the end of the semester, students will submit written research papers.

Assessment will be based on classroom participation (10%), the collection and analysis of phonetic data (15%), an oral presentation of work in progress (20%), a topic related bibliography of relevant literature (10%), as well as a written research paper (45%).
