Title of the seminar:
Perspectives on English: description, prescription, proscription

Please note: this seminar is basically a 'second edition' of the seminar with the same title that was offered last term (summer term 2014), as there was a waiting list for this seminar then. This means that if you have already got credits for this seminar from last term and need credits for another one, you need to choose another seminar.

Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this seminar we shall work towards an understanding of how English is described in linguistics research and reference works (dictionaries, grammars) and how the language gets prescribed for learning and teaching (in syllabi, coursebooks, etc.). Sometimes prescription also includes proscription, in the sense that learners are told to avoid certain forms/expressions.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students will be assessed on the basis of participation in discussions throughout the course, a short project outline, a bibliography, the oral presentation of their research project, and a written seminar paper.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The objective of this course is to foster awareness of the relationship between linguistic description and pedagogic prescription, and to encourage future teachers to ask critical questions about this relationship in order to arrive at informed decisions about their own priorities for the learners in their specific teaching contexts.

Prüfungsstoff

In the first phase of the seminar, we shall engage in a shared reading and discussion of several papers or book chapters, focussing in particular on how practitioners derive guidelines for teaching from linguistic descriptions. We shall then consult the sources (corpora) that are usually drawn on for such descriptions, and those that might be drawn on but usually are not. We shall home in on certain functions and forms and undertake our own investigations, which will serve as preparation for participants designing their own projects. The ideas and findings arising from these small-scale research projects will then be presented and discussed in the last phase of the seminar.

Literatur

Some readings and electronic resources (corpora) will be named and discussed in the first phase of the seminar.
