Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course deals with language policy, i.e. with the roles and functions of language(s) in various social domains. Seeing that languages gain and develop their functions through discourse, we will examine language policy from a (critical) discursive perspective. More precisely, the seminar will focus on how language policy materialises in the areas of (a) language and migration; (b) EU language management; (c) the role of English (as a lingua franca) in business; (d) the role of English (as a lingua franca) in education. During the introductory phase of the seminar we will learn about the complexity of language policy as a product and process, become familiar with aspects of (critical) discourse approaches, and discuss underlying theoretical concerns.
After the initial intensive phase, participants will work on their individual projects. Oral presentations will be given during a blocked session on 29 May 2015. Attendance is obligatory.
