Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

What makes murder such an appealing topic for all forms of literature from poetry to prose? This proseminar sets out to 'investigate' this question. Students will be asked to read a variety of text all of which feature crime detecting characters. Particular attention will be paid to how late nineteenth and early twentieth century authors have formed and shaped the figure of the private detective.

Students will be introduced to different theoretical tools used in academic textual analysis, such as:

Narratology & Storyworld Building
Foucault's theory of discourse
Ideology & Hegemony critique
Gender & Queer studies
