Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Contents: The introductory seminar will deepen students' knowledge of literary theory, methodologies and of the practice of literary analysis; it will provide the practical skills indispensable to writing an academic research paper in the field of English literary studies. Students will be familiarized with the use of relevant electronic databases, conventional bibliographies, the MLA style sheet as well as the most important reference books. The focus, however, will be on scholarly approaches to both the 'discourse level' and the 'story level' of literary works in the three major genres (poetry, drama, fiction) and on the way critical studies (secondary sources) are to be dealt with in a correct scholarly manner to avoid the charge of plagiarism. The literary texts selected for discussion will all be concerned thematically with illicit (extra-marital) love relationships and encompass short stories, a play and poems from various literary epochs and cultural backgrounds. The texts include a narrative from Chaucer's "The Legend of Good Women" (c. 1390), Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure" (c. 1604), love poems by Elizabethan and 17th c. poets and short stories by Hardy, D. H. Lawrence, James Joyce, T. C. Boyle and various contemporary Irish and British writers.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Requirements: Regular attendance, active participation in all discussions in class, one presentation per participant (20-30 mins); type-written PS-paper in English (min. 3,000 words), which must be written individually by each participant (the PS paper must be handed in at the appointed date); a final test to be written in the final lesson in class (it requires a thorough knowledge of all the issues dealt with during the semester as well as of all the texts discussed in class).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aims: To advance the students' theoretical knowledge in the areas of Anglophone literary and cultural studies and their practical interpretative skills as well as their competence in literary criticism; to expand the students' personal reading canon and knowledge of literary history; to further develop students` cross-cultural understanding and expertise in writing research papers; to enhance the students' proficiency in both written and spoken English.

Prüfungsstoff

Methods: interactive, computer-aided teaching supported by the e-learning platform "Moodle", some teacher-centred introductory units will be followed by cooperative student-centred teaching units with students' presentations and forum discussion.

Literatur

Texts: Shakespeare, "Measure for Measure" (preferably Arden Pb or Oxford Pb edition; students are requested to acquire a copy of their own); a "Reader" containing all the remaining texts (poems and short stories) will be provided by Oct 8 (can be purchased at the Copy-Studio, Schwarzspanierstrasse 10).
