Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
After model analyses of a number of texts of all genres and from all periods of English literature we will will explore two texts which are set against the background of political developments in the 1930s and the 1950s: Arnold Wesker's drama 'Chicken Soup with Barley' (1958) and Kazuo Ishiguro's Booker Prize winning novel 'The Remains of the Day' (1989). 'Chicken Soup with Barley' treats of social idealsim, comradeship, brootherhood as well as political disillusionment and the disintegration of a family. In entires contrast to the politically-coonscious figures in Wesker's play, Stevens, the narrator-protagonist in Ishiguro's novel, is convinced that only through service to a great personage can one hope to make a contribution toward a better world. The butler Stevens follows a code of self-effacement, of self-abnegation, his sense of self being entirely defined by his ideal of service, of service to his master Lord Darlington.
